Fans are campaigning to get Rik Mayall's World Cup song to number one

The late comedian recorded a World Cup tune in 2010 – but can it top the charts in 2014?

A CAMPAIGN CREATED in tribute to the late Rik Mayall has succeeded in getting the comedian into the UK Top 40, just days after his death.

A Facebook page has been set up to get the comedian’s lost World Cup song to top the charts during the 2014 tournament – and over 17,000 people have joined the effort so far.

The song features Mayall reading a speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V over a rousing chorus typical of a World Cup song.

The Facebook campaign is being aided by DJ Jon Morter, the same guy who beat out X Factor winner Joe McElderry to make Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name the Christmas number one for 2009.

As of last night, the song is at number one in the Amazon download charts, number three in the iTunes charts, and number 38 in the official UK Midweek Top 40.

According to the Express, the song failed to chart when it was originally released in 2010.

Can they get it to the top spot? We’ll have to sit tight and see.
